Supervision
My aim as a supervisor is for your clients to feel empowered and able to live well. To work toward that aim, I draw on a range of roles and skills to help you build and reinforce your confidence and your capacity for ethical practice.
Those roles and skills start with the empathy, respect and authenticity that are the essential basis for all my therapeutic work.
The tasks we do together will always be based on a balance between challenge and support.
I’m committed to my own development as well as your own and you can be sure I have my own psychotherapy clients as well as supervision clients, and I make sure my own practice is supported by a supervisor and a commitment to continuous learning and development inside and outside work.
My model of supervision is based on the idea that you and your clients need us and our relationship to be functional. That means we’ll start our work with an agreement on how three areas of our supervisory relationship are going to work; the formative, helping you to develop your practice; the restorative, ensuring that your life outside of work nourishes and balances the demands that work puts on you; and the normative, each of us being mindful of the boundaries of safe practice that are written into our agreement, the agreement with your clients and the code of ethics of our professional body. We’ll review the agreement every now and then.
I know that there’s no such thing as the perfect model for practice, so I’ll stay alert to aspects of our work that aren’t being covered by the model, and I’ll always welcome your thoughts on the direction, purpose and conduct of our working relationship.
I aim to work in an anti-oppressive way and I try to be sensitive to the cultural differences between me and my clients and the nuances they can bring to the work. I try to be aware of the deaf, dumb and blind spots that my white, male privilege can create for me, and I won’t be defensive if you mention something that bothers you about the way I work with you.
If you’re looking for a supervisor and want to discuss your practice with me, you can make an appointment from my booking page, 30 minute appointments for initial consultations are free of charge.
